When Alexa Vega, star of the original Spy Kids, pops up on-screen in Spy Kids 4 as a full-fledged adult, it will make you feel old. Yes, it’s been 10 years since the first film, and while Robert Rodriguez’s grasp of micro-budget effects has come a long way, his knack for kid-friendly stories hasn’t. The jokes are groan-inducing even for the elementary school set, and the less said about the Aroma-Scope scratch-and-sniff cards given out the better, except to point out that nearly half of the smell cues are flatulence-related. While it might seem futile to critique the script of a movie like this, it’s truly amazing that Rodriguez managed to work the word ‘time’ into almost every line of dialogue. The movie also features Jeremy Piven in multiple roles, which really should be enough of a red flag on its own, and Ricky Gervais as the voice of a robot dog that speaks exclusively in fart jokes and Ricky Gervais stand-up bits.
