MP’s criticism won’t lead to reduction in MLAs

The Dexter government does not intend to reduce the number of MLAs as a cost saving measure, despite criticism from a sitting Liberal MP.

Kings-Hants MP Scott Brison said the province is facing an economic catastrophe unless drastic steps are taken — including reducing the number of MLAs. But NDP director of communications Shawn Fuller said there are currently no plans reduce the number of provincial politicians.

“Government does not intend to cut the number of MLAs. However … we’ve already frozen the wages for MLAs, senior officials and political staff,” he said.

Fuller said the government is taking steps to rein in spending — with $1.1-billion in savings planned through spending restraint, including $250-million in public sector wage restraint.

“Through a number of initiatives, including expenditure management, (government) is looking at all ways we can streamline and balance,” he said.
