Cyclists and pedestrians in the city’s south end got a new trail to blaze as the Sawmill Creek multi-use pathway opened Thursday.
Three levels of government contributed a total of $250,000 to complete the paved, two-lane pathway, which stretches 1.275 kilometres from Walkley Road to Hunt Club Road and connects to the South Keys transit station.
Mayor Larry O’Brien, Ontario Infrastructure Minister Bob Chiarelli and River Coun. Maria McRae were on hand to officially open the new pathway.
Avid cyclist James Wilson gave the pathway a thumbs-up.
“It’s great,” he said. “I just can’t wait for Phase 2 so that I can get down to Bowesville without having to go on the Airport Parkway, which has claimed the lives of a few cyclists in my time.”
