‘Music is my sun — and you’re blocking my light’

With a sudden iTunes chart-topping single and calls from major producers across the nation, Sam Adams is not your typical college senior. He debuted his newest EP, “Boston’s Boy,” to a packed house of screaming fans at a venue in the title town, where we sat down to talk about “higher” education.

Your hit single is called “I Hate College.” What do the administrators of Trinity College — where you’ve been attending school the past four years — think about one of their students saying this?

They haven’t said anything at all. In terms of the kids who go there, everyone’s been so responsive to my music. They’ve probably already heard that song too many times, though.

A lot of your music is about college and partying — what will you do when you graduate?

I’ll still be 22. I’ll still be partying. I have a lot more pop rap coming out. I want to have fun. I don’t plan on being a gangster rapper. It’s party music, music that young people like, and that’s who I want to reach.

Critics often say your music isn’t hip-hop in its purest form. Do you agree?

I catch a lot of s—. People say I’m not a rapper, I’m a pop star. I’m not claiming to be either. I mix dub-step and techno beats and electronic music, but I still keep my roots in hip-hop music.
