Mystery smelly fog shuts down Health Canada lab

A south-end Health Canada building was locked down Monday after a security officer noticed a foul odour and fog in an area of the building.

Shortly after midnight, a security officer who was doing patrol in the Health Canada laboratory building at 775 Brookfield Dr. noticed a smell in one of the corridors, said Health Canada Brookfield Laboratory director Jack Cornett.

“His eyes burned a bit and he backed out of the building,” said Cornett.

The worker also said he saw a bit of fog in the corridor, Cornett said.

Health Canada called the Ottawa fire department to assist and locked down the building. The building’s 180 employees were moved to an adjacent building for the day while Hazmat workers investigated. Although the incident happened “in a very localized area,” people had to be moved because of the building’s ventilation system, Cornett said.
