NCC kicks off its annual Sound and Light Show on Parliament Hill

It may be a place where the country’s business is done, but during the summer, Parliament Hill is also a source of free entertainment for tourists and residents alike.

The National Capital Commission kicked off its annual Sound and Light Show last night.

At 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. through Aug. 9 and at 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. from Aug. 10 to Sept. 13, Parliament Hill serves as a backdrop for the popular multi-media production.

“On average since 2005, we’ve had about 245,000 people that attend per summer,” said NCC spokeswoman Geneviève Brisson.

“The show includes lights and images projected onto the Parliament building and music and narration that tells the story of our country — about different achievements and about some of the people who have made an impact on our country,” she said.

This will be the last summer for the current show, as the NCC will introduce a new one next year, she said.

While the show is a popular evening event, daytime events include guided tours of the Parliament buildings and the Changing of the Guard ceremony, which marks its 50th anniversary this year.

“We’re letting people know what is offered to them if they want to stay in town,” said Brisson. “This is a chance to discover what is going on in your town and to get to know it a bit better.”
