New jerseys rich with symbolism

Hockey Canada yesterday unveiled the jerseys that will be worn by Team Canada during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A red Maple Leaf sits in the centre of the uniform, inside of which several Canadian symbols — including First Nation imagery, iconic animals like a moose and beaver, and a hockey player and stick — are featured.

“The jerseys honour the game of hockey and also celebrate our rich Canadian history and culture,” said Scott Smith, Hockey Canada’s COO, at the University of B.C. Thunderbird Arena.

John Furlong, CEO of VANOC, said he expects Canadians will wear the jersey not just to hockey games, but all sporting events.

“This is very important in our country, very much a part of our culture,” he said.

“This sweater represents (our athletes’) vision and mission and determination to make every Canadian feel a part of the Olympics.”
