New Sox GM official today

The Red Sox will introduce Ben Cherington as their new general manager at a 3 p.m. news conference at Fenway Park, the team announced yesterday.

Cherington, a 37-year-old New Hampshire native, is taking over the job from Theo Epstein, who’s set to finally take the reins as the Chicago Cubs’ president of baseball operations.

Cherington has been an assistant GM since 2009, and briefly served as co-GM with Jed Hoyer in 2005.

His first jobs will be finishing a compensation package for Epstein and finding a new manager.

The Cubs, meanwhile, plan to introduce Epstein at noon today. The former Sox boss reportedly visited his new office at Wrigley Field yesterday, then went to lunch with a number of team staffers at Chicago’s Vines on Clark.

Hoyer is expected to leave his current job with the Padres to serve as GM in Chicago.
