A win in last year’s U.S. Open Cup over the New York Red Bulls wasn’t enough for the New York Cosmos. Now they want New Jersey as well.
On Wednesday afternoon, a billboard went up outside Red Bull Arena, advertising season tickets for the Cosmos, the highly ambitious NASL side that has big dreams for the upcoming season. And while they don’t play in MLS, it doesn’t mean that the club hasn’t made a major splash this offseason with the signing of former Spanish international Raul along with several other high level pursuits. Now the Cosmos are looking to go across the river with this signage purchased in Harrison, N.J., which has been the home of Red Bull Arena since 2010.
The billboard, located just off Route 280 and within a stone’s throw from Red Bull Arena, touts this optimism by the Cosmos and features Raul alongside another former Spanish international Marcos Senna, now in his third year with the team. In addition head coach Giovanni Savarese, a former MetroStars forward and legend, is prominent on the billboard.
What might stick out the most is what the billboard doesn’t say about the glaring difference between the Cosmos and the Red Bulls. While the MLS side saw the legendary Thierry Henry retire, fired head coach Mike Petke in a surprise move, replaced a sporting director,let go of designated player Tim Cahill and went through a rather extensive roster overhaul, the Cosmos have been the picture of stability.
They return Savarese and their entire coaching staff as well as nine likely starters in their Starting XI as they look for a return to the Soccer Bowl, which they won in 2013.
The billboard counts as its neighbor the #RedBullOut billboard that went up several weeks ago. Formed by a group of fans asking for Red Bull to sell the team, the catalyst for the movement was the firing of Petke in January.
