The news comes as a bit of a surprise for many while some believed the former Tennessee Titans player wouldn’t make the New England Patriots roster after failing to impress in the last three pre-season games.

While Coach Bill Belichick offered up a positive spin on Decker’s recent performance on the field and his brief time with the team, it was clear that the former Broncos star wasn’t gelling with Tom Brady and the rest of the star line-up after a mediocre performance in the team’s August 24 game against Carolina Panthers.

“I think Eric’s learned everything well,” Belichick offered. “Again, he had a background in this system in Denver with Josh [McDaniels] and he’s played multiple positions in the offense since he’s been here. We used a couple new formations last night so I don’t think learning is really a problem for him and he has a lot of experience of some of the more sophisticated routes, option routes and things like that are all things that he’s done and it’s just really a question of getting the timing and the exactly how you want to do it and seeing enough looks on it so that you and the quarterback know exactly what it is.”

The news of Eric Decker’s retirement has many nervous about the upcoming season now that the New England Patriots will be down a wide receiver.
