A man died after running the first mile of the annual Krispy Kreme Challenge in North Carolina over the weekend, according to reports.

Organizers of the race in Raleigh said the 58-year-old man dropped out of the race on Saturday morning because of chest pains, the New York Post reported.

The runner left the race just before he reached the 2.5-mile marker of the race where participants eat a dozen doughnuts before finishing the rest of the 5-mile course, according to Huffington Post.

“We regretfully confirm that a participant of today’s Krispy Kreme Challenge has died,” the race said on its Facebook page, reported the Huffington Post. “He was transported by EMS to Rex Hospital where he was pronounced dead. We are deeply saddened and wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones.”
