The masked man with an English accent who features in ISIS’ gory beheading videos of hostages including Americans James Foley, Steven Sotloff and Peter Kassig has been revealed as Mohammed Emwazi, a computer programmer who was bought up in a bourgeois family in London. The U.K.’s secret service tried to recruit him before he fled to Syria in 2012.

ISIS looked for profitable new lands

The Islamist terrorist group needs to take over territories with resources that can fund their activities, according to new research. At the moment the group raises cash through theft, extortion and and snatching oil fields, but they’re going to need to take over new regions in order to keep up with their current spending levels, says the report.

A free speech blogger was killed in a machete attack

Avijit Roy, a U.S. citizen of Bangladeshi origin, is the latest victim of a spate of attacks on free-thinking bloggers working in Bangladesh. The blogger, who wrote about humanist issues and condemned Islamic extremism was attacked on his way back from a book fair.

Steam yoga guru was accused of rape

The celebrity yogi behind the yogic routine that involves sweating profusely in a hot room, is probably feeling rather hot under the collar. A Canadian Bikram instructor has accused him of rape; she’s the sixth woman to come forward with sex abuse claims against the flexible fellow.
