The Toronto Maple Leafs begin their two-game road trip tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET when they face off against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena. This is their second meeting of the season, Tampa Bay won the first by the score of 4-1.
Toronto has been playing .500 hockey in their last 10 games, going 5-5-0 which includes a current two-game losing streak. The Maple Leafs are 28-15-2 with 58 points overall this season which has them fourth in the Eastern Conference. With a win tonight, they will have sole possession of the second seed.
The Maple Leafs tend to be better on the road this season, they are 15-5-1 away from home ice and just 13-10-1 at home.
The 21-year old phenom, Auston Matthews is on pace to set a career high in assists. He has 22 assists so far this season and his career high is 29 which he recorded in each of his first two seasons.
Tampa Bay is 36-9-2 with 74 points this season. They are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games and are coming off a 2-0 win against Dallas after they had their three-game winning streak snapped by the Islanders on Jan. 13.
As of today, the Lightning are on pace for 129 points. They have 74 points in 47 games this season. That would beat the record for most points in the salary cap era set by Detroit back in 2005-06 when they had 124 points.
Tampa Bay’s best player, right winger Nikita Kucherov has recorded 75 points this season with 22 goals and 53 assists. He is one of three skaters with 20 or more goals this season.
Tonight’s contest between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Tampa Bay Lightning will be featured on ESPN+ and will be an important game for both teams.
