The Vancouver Canucks host the San Jose Sharks in a Western Conference showdown tonight at 10 p.m. ET at the Rogers Arena. Tonight’s contest is the second of four games this season. San Jose came out on top 4-0 in their last matchup on Nov. 23.
The Sharks are 33-16-7 with 73 points and are currently on a five-game winning streak. San Jose is tied with the Winnipeg Jets for second in the West and is just one point back of Calgary for the number one seed.
Defenseman Brent Burns leads the team with 11 goals, 50 assists, and 61 points this season. Burns is one of nine skaters with 10 or more goals on the year.
The Sharks have been excellent on the power play this season; they are fifth in the NHL, scoring on 24.6% of their opportunities.
Vancouver is 25-24-7 with 57 points and is coming off a 4-3 shootout victory over the Flames in their last outing. The Canucks are ninth in the West and are two points back of the seventh seed.
The bottom half of the West is still in a tight race; there is a four-point differential between seeds Nos. 7-through-11.
Center Elias Pettersson leads the team in every offensive category; he has 25 goals, 25 assists, and 50 points this year.
One of Vancouver’s weaknesses is their special teams; they convert on only 16.3% of their power plays which ranks them 25th in the league and they have a 79.5% success rate on the penalty kill which has them 20th.
