No one injured in Halifax house fire

HALIFAX – More than 30 Halifax firefighters battled a blaze at a large residence in the city’s south-end early today.

Fire service spokesman Dave Meldrum says units were called to the three-storey home at 1454 Birchdale Avenue at 6:30 a.m.

He says the home’s two-storey attached garage, which houses a residential unit on the top floor, was fully engulfed in flames.

Meldrum says it took nearly four hours to extinguish the fire, which made its way into numerous attic spaces and wall cavities.

The garage is still standing but is severely damaged, while the main portion of the home suffered smoke and water damage.

No one was inside the home at the time, and investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire.
