Internet service providers beware — a northwest Calgary community is the first in Canada to get free Wi-Fi.

The unique innovation is the first of its kind in Canada and Hawkwood was chosen as the first community, according to Alan Dubreil, VP of marketing for GoNaeco.

“Everyone in the neighbourhood will have access to free Internet, and they are very happy. But I think more than having free internet, everyone is happy to have a choice,” he said.

Currently throughout the month of November Enmax crews are installing 23 wireless nodes throughout the community on new light standards.

The free Internet service will be low speed but users have an option to upgrade to high-speed at rates lower than competition, he added.

“If everything goes well in the neighbourhood we plan to extend to other communities as well.”

Dubreil said the service is directed towards the community and the home page will feature upcoming events and services in the area for all users.

Hawkwood resident Sarah Braniff wasn’t aware of the service, set to begin on Dec. 1, but said she would love to try it out.

“It’s free — you can’t go wrong with that. I would be interested in using it, and I’m sure the kids will love it even more,” she said.
