Not just another hair band

The Willowz are more than just their beautiful hair.

But even as your ears take in their catchy four-on-the-floor rock, it really is hard for your eyes to ignore the hirsute appearance of the three guys and one woman in the band.

“They don’t ever wash their hair really that much,” says bassist Jessica Reynoza, in a tone both playful and irritated that her bandmates’ locks are getting all the attention. “I have beautiful hair.”

So what kind of products do the boys use?

For this one, Reynoza hands the phone to singer Richie James Follin, who has just finished his sandwich.

“What’s surprising is we don’t use anything,” he says. “Everybody thinks our hair looks so great, but that’s just the way it looks.”

As for the band’s sound, Follin has a bit of Jack White’s nasal exuberance, and the band behind him sound like they were schooled on classic rock via Kings of Leon.

“Yeah, we definitely listen to a lot of classic rock,” says Reynoza. “I mean, on the current tour we’ve been listening to all kinds of music.”

She goes on to elaborate about MGMT, Ariel Pink, Paramore, the Killers and Vampire Weekend, many of them bands that they have played with and befriended.

“We’re into kind of what’s new and coming out,” she says, “all our friends’ new albums.”
