A New York state corrections officer and his wife were shot in their Queens home Sunday night, and investigators are trying to determine whether they were targeted, multiple news outlets reported.

The officer, 58-year-old Henry Wright, was shot five times in the midsection and his wife, Sharon Floyd-Wright, 52, was shot once in the shoulder, the New York Daily News reported.

Authorities say the attack began as a robbery at the home in the Jamaica section of Queens, around 7 p.m. Two men knocked on the door, and when Floyd-Wright answered, they rushed in and started firing, ABC7 reported. Floyd-Wright managed to hit one of the attackers with a hammer.

Investigators are searching for the assailants, described as in their 20s or 30s and wearing dark clothing, possibly having escaped in a dark-colored vehicle, ABC7 reported.

The couple was taken to a local hospital. Henry Wright is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, according to the Daily News.
