Offenders shovel off burdens

While many Bay Staters are waiving the white flag at Mother Nature this winter, Dana Mendes is welcoming the snow.

The former convict has spent the past few weeks shoveling to pay off his court fees instead doing community service. “It’s hard labor, but someone’s got to do it,” Mendes said.

Mendes was part of a crew of seven former convicts on probation or parole who were widening walkways and breaking up ice at the Common yesterday.

The effort is part of the state’s Trail Court Community Service Program that gives indigent people the chance to pay off fees by doing community service.
