Old Boston Common bathroom to become sandwich shop

The old stone structure on Boston Common that was once used as a
bathroom will be home to a sandwich shop as early as April of 2012.

According to Mayor Thomas Menino, the city signed a 15-year contract
with “Earl of Sandwich” to start selling hot sandwiches from the grassy
knoll of the Common.

The sandwich chain will pay an annual $50,000 payment to keep it’s food
on site and restore the building, dubbed “The Pink Palace” for so many
years, at its own expense.

“We welcome Earl of Sandwich and look forward to a new casual dining
option in the city as they transform the building into an entirely new
use,” Menino said in a statement.

The building is a 660-square-foot structure named for the color of its masonry. It resembles a mini-castle-like building.

Although it has been vacant for decades, in the 1920’s it was used as a toilet, according to reports.
