Olympian follows bloodlines

Rummaging through his father’s belongings in the basement after losing him to cancer, Duff Gibson stumbled across a plaque he’d never seen or heard of before.
“It said thanks for donating 100 times. It was from what was then the Red Cross,” said Gibson, who won singles skeleton gold for Canada at the Torino Olympics.
“He never mentioned it, it’s just something he did on a regular basis and was something he believed in.”
With the plaque now hanging in his house, Gibson was on hand yesterday at the West Canadian Place building on 6 St. SW for the Athleticus Maximus kick off of the Calgary Corporate Blood Donor Challenge, which annually accounts for 11 per cent of southern Alberta’s blood drive efforts, said Canadian Blood Service’s Ingrid Wasylyshen.
