A hot resale market has ignited online for 2010 torches.
A B.C. runner has posted an offer on Craigslist to sell an Olympic torch to the highest bidder, after showing it to family and a local elementary school.
The seller said he/she wants to keep his/her identity secret so as not to lose a place in the run.
There are also at least three Craigslist entries from people looking to purchase a torch. The highest is $2,000.
David Calder, a torch runner in Victoria on Friday, said he couldn’t imagine selling his torch.
Calder, an Olympic rower who won Canada’s first medal in Beijing (a silver), said he’s still trying to find space in his office for his oar. He said he suspects the torch might end up in a crawl space, where it could be taken out for special occasions.
“I think it’s something that will be more significant for the next generation of my family … It’ll perk interest when I’m long dead.”
Earlier this week, a seller in Greece posted on eBay one of the torches carried by a runner during the Greek leg of the relay for $2,500 US.
