On time, on budget, says airport official

The massive expansion of the Edmonton International Airport is moving forward on time and under budget, according to Paul Garbiar, the airport’s vice-president of infrastructure and technology.

“Everything’s on schedule,” Garbiar said yesterday.

“We actually anticipate delivering this project approximately 25 per cent below the $1-billion initial budget.”

Since construction got underway last year, the airport has added more than 480,000 square feet of space to its facilities.

One of the airport’s biggest additions will be the new control tower, which will boast wave-like formations on its exterior in order to reduce the need for heating, cooling and power by capturing sunlight.
