A Vancouver councillor wants city hall open to a group opposing the incoming Harmonized Sales Tax.
A motion by Coun. Ellen Woodsworth tomorrow would allow Fight HST organizers access to city hall during business hours to allow more residents to sign the petition.
“Its impact on business and citizens in this city will have significant negative repercussions,” Woodsworth said yesterday.
City council has already passed a motion opposing the HST, she added.
The city’s parks board is voting tonight on whether to let petitioners set up in the lobbies of community centres.
Over the weekend, New Democrat MPs Libby Davies and Don Davies handed out postcards that people could send to their member of Parliament in a bid to block the HST.
The pending 12 per cent tax, which on July 1 will replace the five per cent GST and seven per cent PST, passed the House of Commons and received Royal Assent by the Canadian Senate in December.
Fight HST has signed up its goal of 10 per cent of voters in all 85 ridings, more than 600,000 signatures provincewide. It will continue to collect signatures until July 5.
