Ottawa man faces fraud charges for fake cheque scheme

A 28-year-old Ottawa man faces fraud charges following a joint investigation by Ottawa and Gatineau police.

The Ottawa Police Service Organized Fraud Unit, in partnership with Gatineau police, conducted a month-long investigation into the manufacturing and distribution of fraudulent cheques.

Police alleged Wednesday that suspects were recruiting street people in Ottawa to cash fraudulent cheques at various financial institutions. The investigation led to two search warrants being executed in Ottawa and Gatineau Tuesday. Police seized computer equipment, a printer, blank cheques, currency and a vehicle.

A man faces charges of conspiracy to commit indictable offences and counseling to commit indictable offences.

Khaled Shegow appeared in court yesterday.

Police said they expect to lay further charges in the ongoing investigation.
