Pair await charges after police chase and crash

Two men were arrested and remain in police custody Tuesday afternoon in Halifax after they allegedly led cops on a high-speed chase and then rammed their car into a police cruiser.

The incident began around 11:30 a.m. this morning, when police say they attempted to pull the men over along Herring Cove Road for a traffic violation. Instead of stopping, police say the driver sped up, resulting in a brief chase that was called off almost immediately when speeds reached dangerous levels.

“It turned out the vehicle had just been stolen, but we only got that information as they were being pursued,” said Halifax Regional Police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter.

Using a tip from a witness, the police cornered the suspects a short time later in a small lane off Harborview Drive in Halifax’s south end. According to Palmeter, officers attempted to block the road, but the driver sped up and rammed into the cruiser. One officer was inside the vehicle, but was unhurt. Damage to the cruiser was minimal.

“The suspects then tried to flee on foot…but we were able to track them using our canine unit, leading to their arrest,” said Palmeter.

A number of charges are pending in connection with the incident.
