MONTREAL – A parachutist died Monday in Quebec’s Lanaudiere region when he failed to deploy his parachute.
The 38-year-old man plummeted to his death near Saint-Esprit, some 40 kilometres north of Montreal.
Quebec provincial police say the man failed in his first attempts to release his parachute after jumping from a height of 14,000 feet.
He managed to trigger the backup parachute a few hundred feet from the ground but it was too late to soften his landing.
He was killed on impact.
Police say the man and people who accompanied him were experienced parachutists.
