Parking break would cost $1.5M: Report

Cutting people who park at C-Train lots a break on weekends and evenings could cost the city $1.5 million, a city report says.

Last month the city imposed a $3 per day fee at select park-and-ride lots in an effort to drum up more cash for maintenance and security for the 33 locations around the city.

Hoping to lessen the impact on those who use the system, some aldermen had suggested dropping the fee on weekends and evenings but a report coming to council Monday says that would likely reduce revenues by $1.5 million.

In order to make up the money, the city would have to slash 44,000 transit hours and 38 full-time positions, the report says.

But Ald. Ric McIver said the scheme to charge transit users makes no sense. “It’s difficult to call it a break when people didn’t have to pay a fee at all a month ago,” he said.
