Pawn shop owner charged with drug, war medal offences

Police arrested a 65-year-old Ottawa man after seizing Oxycontin pills and war medals from a downtown pawn shop earlier this week.

The Ottawa Police Street Crime Unit executed a controlled drugs and substances act search warrant in the 300 block of Dalhousie Street Tuesday.

They seized nearly 500 Oxycontin pills with an estimated street value of $2,500, as well as $9,000 in cash, three stolen credit cards and six Canadian war medals. It is an offence to take into pawn any war medals under the pawnbrokers act.

Business owner Maofid Saikely faces charges including breach of probation, possession for the purposes of trafficking, trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime under and over $5,000. He appeared in court Wednesday.

Police are investigating further to locate the owner of the war medals.
