Picking up the prize

It wasn’t hard for Lauren Smith to stand and deliver the best pickup line of the night at the Cask ‘n Flagon last Thursday. She had been practicing it all night at Game On before walking across the street and winning an overnight getaway at Mohegan Sun in the bar’s best pickup line contest.

“I feel like if I told it and they were like ‘Oh your pickup line sucks,’ I would not have told it and I would not have told it so confidently,” Smith, 24, said.

Arriving 30 minutes late, Smith strutted up to the stage and said, “I have a magical watch that tells me you’re not wearing any underwear. Oh wait, no, sorry, it’s an hour late.”

About 25 female contestants pitched their best pickup lines to judge Chris Lambton, a finalist from the last season of ABC’s “The Bachelorette.”

“It was her confidence and delivery,” Lambton, a Cape Cod resident, said of Smith. “It’s all about confidence, she definitely came up confident and had a strong delivery. As soon as she said it I said ‘Oh that’s the top one. That’s No. 1, no one even came close.”

With a much smaller guy’s field, Bill Anastasia, 29, took home the prize with this line: “Excuse me, I think you have something in your eye. Oh sorry, that’s just a sparkle.”

Anastasia also pitched another line: “What has 42 teeth and holds back the Incredible Hulk? My zipper.”

“It’s just something I found on the Internet this morning,” he said afterward.
