Playing the Field: Alex Ovechkin tries to not be creepy around his new fiancee Maria Kirilenko, fails

What a WAG-wild week it has already been in the sports world.

Katherine Webb kicked off the week in fantastic form, gaining 200,000 Twitter followers in a little over 24 hours just by being ogled by an old man on live TV (if only the path to global success was that easy for the rest of us).

Since then, ESPN has apologized for Musburger’s actions (can’t we just laugh at a situation like this anymore without getting worked up about it?) and we’ve learned that 200,000 more people on this planet would probably like to have relations with Ms. Webb including LeBron James and Arizona Cardinals d-lineman Darnell Dockett.

Today we have the not-as-exciting news that tennis star Maria Kirilenko (no relation to the T’Wolves small forward) is engaged to hockey star Alexander Ovechkin. Admittedly, we were a little late to the dance on this with Ovechkin popping the question on New Year’s Eve. But it ties in nicely with the Webb story and the Lala Anthony stuff and we want to make this the best PTF WAG week ever SO BACK OFF!!!

Unlike many of her smoking hot tennis predecessors, the 25-year-old Kirilenko is actually pretty good at tennis. No, she’s not as good at tennis as Ovechkin is at hockey but that’s asking a bit much. Kirilenko made the doubles final at the French Open last year with partner Nadia Petrova and is ranked 14th in the world at singles.

Ovechkin told Yahoo!: “It’s a good feeling (to be engaged). You can’t do whatever you want anymore. When you have a girl with a tennis racquet and she can hit you.”

Really, Alex? “It’s a good feeling. You can’t do whatever you want anymore?”

This is supposed to be a ringing endorsement for getting engaged? Is there a language barrier here?

Oh ya, and this photo below from The Daily Telegraph showing the “happy couple” isn’t creepy at all. Not in the least bit.
