A 39-year-old New York City man fled into a swamp, but was unable to avoid arrest by state police troopers who discovered cocaine and hundreds of Oxycontin pills in his car.

The arrest took place during a traffic stop on Interstate 290 in Auburn about 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to state police.

A trooper pulled over the man for driving erratically. When the trooper asked the driver and his two passengers what was going on, he got inconsistent stories.

That led to a search of the vehicle, during which police founda shoebox containing a kilo of cocaine and 500 Oxycontin pills.

That’s when the driver fled. He ran across six lanes of highway traffic and into a wooded area. The passengers were arrested while troopers searched for the driver, who was eventually tracked to a swamp. Two troopers waded into the chest-high water and arrested the man.

State police released photos of one of the soaking-wet troopers who made the arrest.

All three suspects were booked on $100,000 bail.
