Pot-growing landlord and tenant sentenced

A Kanata landlord and her tenant have been sentenced to time in jail after police executed a drug raid at a west-end residence in 2007.

In April 2007, Ottawa police arrested Huyen Thi Dang, who was renting a house at 64 Yoho Dr. in Kanata. Police said they seized over $800,000 in cultivated marijuana from the house.

Homeowner Trang Nguyen, of Toronto, was also charged and convicted with numerous drug-related offences.

The Department of Public Prosecutions restrained Nguyen’s property as well as two of her bank accounts used in connection with the offences, police said.

Ottawa police said the case sets a precedent because it involves the conviction of a homeowner.

Organized criminal groups often use houses belonging to a third party for illicit drug-related activities.

Last week, Dang and Nguyen were sentenced to 12 and nine months in jail, respectively.

The judge ordered the residence at 64 Yoho Dr. and the bank accounts forfeited to the attorney general.

Staff Sgt. Pete Gauthier, of the Ottawa Police Drug Unit, said profit motivation is the driving force behind the majority of criminal activities in our community.

“The Ottawa Police Service is committed to effectively dismantling criminal enterprises by applying legislative tools that enable the removal of assets derived from criminal activities,” he said.
