Pulling for Parker Street

Good Samaritans will be hauling fire trucks in Dartmouth on Sunday morning.

The second annual Pull for Parker Street aims to raise $20,000 for the charity that provides food, furniture and education for those in need.

Spokesman Thomas Gouthro said Thursday they’ve got 17 teams of seven people (including at least one woman) lined up to tug the 40,000-pound fire trucks down a 120-foot track in a timed race.

He’s hoping to get three more teams raising $1,000 each. Gouthro said he realizes it’s likely too late for individuals to raise the money, so he’s asking corporations to pitch in and sponsor workplace teams.

“It’s an absolute spectator sport. We want people to come and cheer on the event,” he said, noting there will be a barbeque, a bungee jumping/climbing wall and a games console.

Monetary donations or non-perishable food items will be accepted at the event.

There will also be an antique fire truck on display and the Union Fire Club Pipe and Drum marching band will kick things off at 10:45 a.m at Dartmouth Crossing.

All money raised will go to Parker Street, which Gouthro says has been hit by the recession.

“We haven’t had anything coming in since Christmas,” Gouthro said. “It’s been a struggle.”
