A new kind of cafe is headed to Brightonand it’s promising to have a lot of “catmostphere.”
PURR Cat Cafe, slated to open in early 2017, will be thefirst of it’s kind in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood— and all of Boston for that matter.
The cafe will offer Wi-Fi to customers and food and drinks will be available from nearby restaurant partners, according to the business’ website.
Amid the lounge areas, patrons will find some purr-ific new friends. The cafe will house 25 cats at a time, according to the website, all of which will be shelter cats available for adoption.
“Purr Cafe will be a safe haven for homeless cats until they find their forever home. PURR will be working with local Boston animal shelters, including Boston’s Forgotten Felines, to find these cats homes,”owner Diane Kelly of Hull wrote on the cafe website.
While Kelly said she’s still working on the particulars, the cafe will likely charge patrons $15 an hour. Ten percent of proceeds will be donated to local shelters.
“Purr was founded with a simple mission: To improve the life of shelter cats and find our cats forever homes. We are excited to do this while simultaneously providing Boston residents and visitors a means to brighten your day by spending time with our special guests,” Kelly wrote.
The cafe earned unanimous approval this week from the Zoning Board of Appeals, but it still has to claw its way over a few hurdles in the permittingprocess before it can open at it’s 167 Chestnut Hill Ave. location, the Boston Globe reported. Neighbors still have a grace period to appeal the decision, an architect needs to submit plans to the city, and paperwork needs to be finalized, but Kelly said she’s eager to open as soon as possible.
“The process of opening Boston’s first cat cafe is more complicated than one might think, but we’re making good progress, and we are hopeful that PURR will be open in early 2017,” she wrote in a blog post.
If Kelly is successful, the cafe would be the second to open in Massachusetts — Franklin welcomed The Calico Nook in the spring of 2015 — and would be one of about 25 in existence in North America, according to Eater.
