Just when it seemed like this year’s “Holy War” game between Boston College and Notre Dame lacked intrigue, an old-fashioned quarterback controversy is stirring things up.
After getting shut out for the first time in 12 years last week — 19-0 to Virginia Tech — the Eagles (2-1) aren’t saying who their signal-caller will be against the Irish on Saturday night. The Boston Globe, however, quoted an unnamed source saying Chase Rettig will get the start.
A 6-foot-4-inch, 205-pound true freshman, Rettig turned down Tennessee, UCLA, USC, Arizona and Arizona State to attend BC.
Starting the first three games, David Shinskie went 39-for-72 passing for 529 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions. After two picks and a fumble against VT, Shinskie was replaced by Mike Marscovetra, who is 8-for-13 for 92 yards.
BC isn’t making any of its QBs available to the media this week.
“People just wanted something new,” freshman wide receiver Johnathan Coleman said. “We know how hard Dave worked and we felt bad about all the people talking bad about him, but coach just wanted a change.”
Despite uncertainty at QB, the atmosphere of the BC-Notre Dame game is always lively. The Eagles have won six of the last seven meetings but lost last season in South Bend.
“This will be my first time,” Coleman said. “The seniors and older guys say it’s much different. Plus it will be different being on a national stage [ABC]. I’ve been looking at video about the history and all the coaches have been telling us the history of the previous games and I’m excited to be part of it.”
