Rainmen working to bring Berry back behind bench

The Halifax Rainmen are hoping to wrap up negotiations to bring back head coach Les Berry “soon.”

Rainmen owner Andre Levingston has been working on bringing Berry back since the Premier Basketball League season ended in March. Levingston hired the Halifax native in February after firing Rick Lewis 11 games into the season.

“I’m getting a lot of phone calls for this position,” Levingston said. “I don’t want my summer interrupted by people calling from all over the place trying to get an interview for this job. It’s something we’ve got to make a decision on very soon.”

Berry’s terms of employment in 2009 did not include scouting and recruiting, but Levingston has said he wants that to change if Berry is brought back. That could affect Berry’s desire to keep the job from infringing on his family time. The two have been trying to find common ground on that front.

The Rainmen recently listed Berry as a coach in their series of summer camps and tournaments for youth.

“Coach and I are still hammering out some details,” said Levingston. “Things look good. We’ve got some things to work through and we’re in discussions now.”

Berry posted a 6-3 record after taking over, but was unable to guide the gifted Rainmen to the playoffs.
