RCMP seeks hate crime charges against 3 men

RCMP are recommending hate charges against three men who walked around downtown Ucluelet with anti-Semitic symbols drawn on their bodies and clothing.

The trio, all in their 20s, also yelled racist comments from a boat on July 31 at people walking along a dock before Mounties arrived.

Romy Ritter, executive director of the Canadian Jewish Congress’ pacific region said he was “shocked and very disappointed that these young men would choose to paint such symbols of hatred on their clothing and on themselves.”

RCMP Sgt. Jeff Swann said the men did not target any specific person.

“It was anybody and random,” said Swann. “In my 13 years of policing I haven’t seen this type of behaviour before.”

The suspects were released from custody yesterday and are set to appear in court next month.

The incident occurred just 28 days after a black man was attacked by three white men in Courtenay in a confrontation that was recorded and posted on YouTube.
