Recovery slow after Haiti quake

Rachel Decoste knew it was going to take a long time for life to return to normal in Haiti, but she’s a little surprised at the slow pace of recovery, six months after an earthquake demolished the Caribbean island nation.

After the quake hit, Decoste and other Haitian-Canadians living in Ottawa started organizing fundraisers that collected tens of thousands of dollars.

“There’s a lot of money that’s been raised, but the results we don’t see immediately,” she said.

“I certainly understand people’s impatience at the very difficult circumstances that hundreds of thousands of Haitians find themselves in,” Canada’s foreign affairs minister Lawrence Cannon said yesterday.

He said rebuilding Haiti is “a long-term process that will take at least 10 years, according to experts.”
