As voluptuous Joan Holloway on Mad Men, Christina Hendricks has been melting hearts with her fiery red hair.
The only thing is, she’s a natural blond.
At the age of 10, Hendricks had a revelation.
“I wanted to be Anne of Green Gables,” she admits. So the red rinses began.
“When I started modelling, I went back to my natural blond colour, but I always felt like a redhead,” she says.
After going red again, “I started working 10 times more than I did as a blond.”
Known as much for her curves as for her hair, Hendricks admits working on a show like Mad Men has been a blessing: She can avoid the gym.
“If (creator Matthew Weiner) sees a defined arm muscle, he’ll tie you down so you can’t use your limbs,” she jokes. “It’s important to him that you don’t see sculpted 2009 bodies.”
Not that anyone’s complaining about the shape Hendricks is in: “I’ve gotten a lot of positive attention,” she says.
Hendricks doesn’t see Joan as using her body overtly. “Joan never really says anything sexual or anything with innuendo.”
One of the biggest takeaways from the show for Hendricks has been the fashion lessons.
“I never would’ve thought to put on a pencil skirt before Mad Men.
“And it does wonders,” she says.
