Red Bull is inviting Boston to take off.

On Aug. 20,Red Bull Flugtag2016 will be in the city for the first time in its 25-year history, and starting Tuesday applicants can apply for the challenge.

Set alongtheEsplanade at the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell on the Charles River,Red Bull Flugtagisasking aspiringaviators to put their limits of human flight to the test.

Competitors will build and pilot their own human-powered flying crafts before taking”the plunge off the 28-foot-high flight deck in front of thousands of roaring fans as they attempt to break the 258-foot distance record,” according to Red Bull.

Translated from German as”flying day,” Red Bull Flugtagcalls forfive-member teams of athletes, carpenters, designers, engineers, entertainers and anyoneinbetween to make their dreams of flight a reality.

“The Department of Conservation and Recreation is excited to partner with Red Bull to host their Flugtag event at the historic DCR Hatch Memorial Shell this year,” Leo Roy,DCR Commissioner, said. “This one of a kind event will encourage individuals to showcase their creativity in what will be a unique and memorable experience for all who attend. Events such as this expand enjoyment of the Charles River Esplanade to new users.”

Red Bull Flugtag encourages creativity on crafts, except copyrighted logos. “The Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins are copyrighted logosbut Tom Brady, Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon are not — so game on!”Craft inspiration can be anything from food, sports, pop culture,music, technology or even mythology.

Participants must be 18 or older to apply. Submitflying-machine plans to www.RedBullFlugtag.com by May 13 deadline. Teams will be selected by June 2.
