Red Sox fall to Blue Jays in 11 innings

It was, in total, a bad day for the Red Sox.

Boston dropped its fifth game in seven tries today, falling to the Blue Jays, 1-0, on Brett Lawrie’s walkoff home run in the 11th inning.

The loss knocked the Sox 2.5 games out of first place in the AL East. The Yankees beat the Orioles, 11-10, in the Bronx.

And that’s not the worst of it. Righty Josh Beckett left the game with two outs in the fourth with a sprained right ankle.

The bullpen filled in admirably for Beckett, with Alfredo Aceves, Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon combining for 6 1/3 shutout innings. But Lawrie connected off Dan Wheeler in the 11th to lift the Jays.

The Boston offense came up cold. Josh Reddick and Marco Scutaro were the closest thing to bright spots, with two hits apiece. The Sox totaled just seven.

Boston (84-56) is at Toronto again tomorrow (7:07 p.m., NESN, WEEI).
