Red Sox: Team ready to talk contract with David Ortiz

The Red Sox aren’t fully prepared to distance themselves from all links to the recent past.

According to ESPN, a team source said that serious conversations with David Ortiz regarding a new contract will begin “at some point next week.”

“David is someone who we feel strongly about bringing back and we’re trying to figure out a way to do that and we hope that happens,” Red Sox GM Ben Cherington recently told ESPN.

Ortiz, the only player remaining from the 2004 World Series championship team, hit .318 with 23 homers and 60 RBIs in 90 games this past season. The slugger was already playing on a one-year deal and voiced his displeasure at one point during the 2012 season about the organization’s hesitation in locking him up longterm. Ortiz is now 36-years-old.
