The Mariners are looking long and hard at free agent second baseman Robinson Cano, several sources told ESPNNewYork.com Tuesday.
“It doesn’t look too good right now,” a source told the website in regard to Cano returning to the Yankees.
It is not expected that New York will be the free-spending machine it has been in the past and with Cano looking for a contract in the range of eight years and $200 million, the Yankees may be prepared to let their best position player walk. The same report indicates the Mariners are willing to make the $200 million offer Cano’s side seeks.
Seattle’s ownership is apparently ready to spend as the source told ESPN that the team is “desperate for hitting and desperate to put people in the ballpark.”
Cano batted .314 with 27 home runs and 107 RBIs last season and has a career average of .309.
The Yankees did officially announce the signing of catcher Brian McCann on Tuesday. He will be introduced in a press conference on Thursday afternoon. The deal was reported last week. He signed for five years and a reported $85 million, with a vesting option for a sixth year.
