Return to glamour — makeup is sheer, shimmery and bold

Indulge in the ’60s trend with L’Oréal’s High Instensity Pigments in Showy, $9.95.

“The formulations for the eyes are very sheer, shimmering metallic powder textures.”

The leaves haven’t begun to change colour yet, but with fall just around the corner your makeup selection just might.

This autumn’s trend is about polished and sophisticated makeup with a matte complexion, smoky eyes, bold liquid eyeliner, sheer washes of colour to the cheeks, shimmering highlighters and nude lips for day and red for night, says Chase Aston, international makeup artist and spokesperson for The Body Shop.

For eyes, Aston says metallic sheer shades are hot for fall, in hues of silver greys, browns, gold “and the occasional splash of green.”

“The formulations for the eyes are very sheer, shimmering metallic powder textures,” said Aston via e-mail from London, England. A swipe of black liquid eyeliner along the top lash line completes the look.

Create shimmery cheeks with The Body Shop’s Brilliance Powder, $22.

Marc Brunet, owner of Beauty Mark (www.beautymark.ca), says the biggest trend this fall is “a return to glamour, with a nod to the ‘60s” with red, browns, grey and black being the dominate colours.

“Russian Beauty: the story here is red lips, earthy brown eyes. Pumped Up Natural: the story here is natural, but very groomed and gorgeous. Gray Matters: The story here is this season’s twist on the smoky eye,” Brunet said. “Mascara is super important for fall ‘07, top and bottom lashes for that nod to the ‘60s.”

For nails, Brunet says deep colours are still in. “Dark polish is still big, big, big. Don’t throw out your black polish or your vampy shades!”

Autumn’s all about smokey eyes. Try MAC’s Smoke Signals collection due out Aug. 23. (Items range from $16.50 to $43).

As part of its overall fall makeup trend, dubbed Future Classics, MAC has come up with four unique sub-trends: Futuregraphic is about eyeliner in a variety of shades like black and silver, PhotoShaped is about natural-looking skin that includes texture, highlighting and dimension, Tecno-Colour is about a vibrant blast of colour and Taylored is about makeup inspired by Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra.

Jane McKay, a senior artists with MAC, has done makeup for top fashion shows in Milan and New York and says a product like a Paint Pot high-pigment eye colour from MAC’s Painterly collection can help achieve a variety of looks.

And what’s a key makeup tip to remember? “If you’re going to wear the smoky eye, go with a more natural mouth,” advises McKay.
