Rex Ryan confident Geno Smith can win games for Jets

Rex Ryan believes in Michael Vick, but the Jets head coach is more than happy to stick with the young quarterback he has starting now.

Geno Smith’s job is safe despite a rough Monday night against the Bears that included some bright spots, but also two very poor interceptions. The second-year quarterback has taken some lumps this year and continues to struggle. He is currently on pace to match last year’s total of 21 interceptions.

With a proven quarterback on the sidelines in Vick, it would seem like the Jets could pull the plug on Smith at any time if he continues to cost the team the chance to win. The Jets, now at 1-2, have several tough games on the schedule over the next month.

“I absolutely believe that Mike can win games as a quarterback. I absolutely believe that,” Ryan said. “But, I also believe that Geno can win games.”

Smith lacked consistency last year, and he hasn’t been able to put together a complete performance over four quarters this season.

“Honestly, I hate talking about last year. I am only focused on the Lions,” Smith said. “I don’t care about what anyone on the outside says in regards to anything negative about myself or about this team. I appreciate the fans, and I know that they come and support us every week. They have to understand that we’re working extremely hard to go out there and win. Right now it is about getting ready for the Lions. That is all we are focused on. I can’t sit here and try and think about something I have no control over. My job is to continue to work hard and get better and lead this team.”
