Riding across continent for Ottawa’s homeless

While in the national capital last year, Texas businessman Lawrence Didsbury passed by the Ottawa Mission.

“It must have been 20 degrees below,” said Didsbury, an IT analyst. “But there was a huge line outside. It broke my heart. There are two things that get me — the homeless and children. They’re the most disadvantaged; they need the most help.”

A year later, the image was still with him. So much so, that he’s embarking on a 7,242-kilometre trip from Houston to Ottawa — and back home again — to benefit charities across North America.

Using social media like blogs, Twitter and Facebook, Didsbury is fundraising for charities, including the Ottawa Mission, where he arrived yesterday.

“I believe there is incredibly powerful potential in the huge numbers of people in these social networking groups,” said Didsbury.
