“Rise of the Guardians” revisits the simplicity of childhood, which has sadly been forgotten in many recent animated films. The Dreamworks flick is smart and innovative as it follows an “Avengers”-style storyline based on a group of iconic, mythical characters like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, who form an allegiance to protect the memories of children, which are being threatened by an evil spirit known as “Pitch.” One of the strongest aspects of the film is how perfectly each character was cast. Alec Baldwin plays an unorthodox Santa Claus, whilst Isla Fisher is a lovable, modern-day version of the Tooth Fairy. Not only is the story suitable for children — teenagers and older audiences can also relate to the film as it explores a range of emotions and themes with a reasonable level of maturity and sophistication.
Based on the novels by William Joyce, “Rise of the Guardians” is a magical story that has the basics of a holiday classic, yet it’s hard to shake the feeling that there is something missing. Whilst the film leaves adults feeling nostalgic and warm and fuzzy inside, children might not find the flick as enjoyable and unforgettable as other holiday-themed favorites like “The Grinch” or “A Christmas Story.”
