Salo’s injury plays out online

Social media has just been nuts with pun-loving wit after Sami Salo, Vancouver’s injury-prone rearguard, was hit by the puck in the nethers Sunday and dropped to the ice in considerable agony.

Although media later refuted it, at the time Salo’s injury was rumoured to be a ruptured testicle.

A Facebook page, purporting to give a first-person account of the defenceman’s injury, was launched only minutes after Salo was taken from the arena on a stretcher.

“Wishes you could have heard Sami’s voice today,” wrote the author as he updated his status yesterday. Later, he admitted it was “hard to type while covered in frozen vegetables.”

By noon yesterday, almost 1,400 people “liked it.” By 5 p.m. that number had jumped to nearly 2,000.

The page’s wall was littered with testicle puns as well as condolences to the oft-injured defenceman.

Fans on Youtube even created a mock “History Will Be Made” video of the event.

Salo, who is one of Vancouver’s top four defencemen, is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury and is doubtful for today’s Game 6 in Vancouver.
