Scenes from the MTV European Music Awards red carpet

On the red carpet of Sunday’s MTV Europe Music Awards–in Frankfurt, Germany–David Hasselhoff got perhaps the biggest applause from fans, with host Heidi Klum, Kim Kardashian and “Gangnam Style” star PSY coming a close second. The random lineup proves what an eclectic show it was.

Metro was on the red carpet to talk to a few of the headliners.

Alicia Keys

Q: Hells Kitchen represent. New York just got its power back after Superstorm Sandy.

A: I know a lot of people that were affected by it and being through New York and gone through it myself–I’ve only had power back for five days. But some people are displaced and lost their homes. It’s a time for us to come together and I’m praying for us and making sure the beautiful part is seeing how people across the world come together.

Q: There’s talk of an apocalypse. What would you tweet, if you knew it was the end of the world?

A: Oh gosh, I really don’t want to think about that. I really don’t. But it’s true it is something to think about. We’re putting so much abuse on this planet. How is it not supposed to react that way?

Q: Maybe the next song–since you’re wearing a green dress–

A: “Going Green” by Alicia Keys.

Q: What are you doing during your performance?

A: You can expect to be set ablaze. Speaking of the environment.

Lana Del Rey

What were you listening to before the show?

We were listening to Chris Isaak and Bruce Springsteen. Americana.

You’re a model for H+M. Do you wear anything lucky from them?

Quotes from PSY, Hasselhoff and Jepsen

“The whole point of ‘Gangnam Style’ is that you don’t have to be that good.”–PSY

“It’s good because I ride horses. It’s very easy.”–David Hasselhoff on dancing “Gangnam Style”

“If you’d asked me when I was 7 years old, I would have told you with utter of confidence, definitely, yes. I’d be a star. But then I grew up.”–Carly Rae Jepsen

Brett Davern from “Awkward”

Q: I got hooked on a marathon. You lose hours of your life.

A: You know what’s funny is, I get addicted to the marathons and I’ve seen it. I’ve lived it. I feel like a loser watching my own show.

Q: Are we supposed to root for your character?

A: I think so. He’s a nice guy! Right?

Q: What were you obsessed with online?

A: The remixes of Carly Rae’s “Call Me Maybe.” We go back to shooting January. I’m gona throw that out to the cast. We should do one!

Jedward

Q: What do you say to Sweden? They love Eurovision.

A: Sweden’s awesome and we can’t wait for them to rock Eurovision. We have so many fans in Sweden. We’ve done two Swedish tours.

Q: Maybe because you guys look Swedish?

A: I mean, we have blonde hair but we don’t–OK, yeah, maybe we do.

Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana

Q: What did you listen to to get excited for tonight?

A: To calm down, Ben Harper. Tonight, to get ready, Damien Marley.

Q: Do you smoke up?

A: No, I don’t need to.

Q: Do Brazilians tend to dress differently? You’re wearing some sort of revealing S+M gear here.

A: For sure. The difference is, people in Europe are more covered up In Brazil, it’s really hot. We want to wear less clothes.

Q: What video did you get obsessed with this year?

A: Rihanna. “Man Down.” I love her. She has a great concept, which, as a model, I aspire to have: a concept.
